The prestation of the creation should include:
- The invention itself
- How we decided to create this item
- The reasons for and users of the invention
- What we learned from the sailors about life our at sea
- How we feel that this invention is suitable for the sailors
- How it will benefit the sailors

Good news

Hey guys the good news is that our volvo ocean race product is 50% done. And the circuit for the 5 super bright LED r done and had been placed in place. Now it just leaft with the drilling of holes for the pivorting point and the cutting of the of spaces for the switch and the potenail meter at the base of the product. And we had change the centre portion the PVC pipe shown

Norman
We are making a lighting device that has functions of a torchlight & a lamp which is portable for use in the cabin of the yacht. After looking at the pictures , i guess making the product not only need to fulfill the needs but also need have a modern look.

Material list
1)PVC (for casing)
2)Acrylic(for the dome shape) x2
3)copper wire
4)wood for former
5)battery pack
6)switch(rocker switch)
7)Resistor
8)super bright LED
9)strip board( if needed)
Suggestions: can we use fibre glass instead of carbon fibre? And use a varible resistor to adjust the light dimness instead of having to covers for the light.

How does our work?
It is being used in the night as an emergency light, or as a portable light(touch light). The product is water resistant and it is light. It comes with a suction pad which allows it to stick on any flat and smooth surface. It is small and compact and it uses super bright LED.
Just for reference

hi, I saw this product (the red one) used in some schools. It is a visualizer I guess, the smaller one is a light and the bigger one is a camera. Both have ajustable metal tube that we thought of earlier for our product. I wonder is it strong enough, did not try shaking it.

Design Brief and Specifications
We had sat down today to discuss on the project and we have identified a problem and came out with the design brief and the design specs.
Problem:
The problem that the sailors faced is that there are only a few places onboard which provides light to the sailors, and the light isn't bright enough. It is only fixed to one place.
Design Brief:
Design and make a portable lighting product to be used out in the ocean for our
adopted team the Telefonica Black.
Design Specifications:
1) The product has to be compact.
2) The product has to be lightweight so that it would not hinder the ship's performance.
3) The product has to be waterproof so that it won't cause a short cuircit .
4) The product has to be able to produce light that is bright enough.
5) The product must not contain any sharp edges.
6) The product has to be idiotproof (user friendly).
7) The product is multi-functional (Direction & spectrum of light).
8) The product has to have an attachment (suction) which it could be used and stored anywhere in the yacht.
How our product works?
Our product could work as a normal lamp that provide light for the sailors ,also it could be used as a torchlight for them to bring it around.
Difference of our design from current lighting products:
The current products that has the same property as our idea has some design flaw ,which is mostly made up of heavy material which a great factor to our project. If extra weight is being added to the yacht, it will hinder the ship's performance, so every gram counts! The light which allows us to bring around is fragile and would break easily (glass bulb & tube) . Which might pose as a hazard to the sailors.
And guys please take a photo of your design and upload them on the blog thanks.

Rethinking
I guess that lighting isn't going to be an easy task , making it detachable is interesting but what if the tube of light breaks?
Erm how about making a lamp like those seen in camping + suction pads( made of pvc , round in shape ). This enables to stick the lamp on anywhere that is smooth and have flat surfaces.
Well this is one of the ideas that i have in mind...i'll see if i can squeeze some more out. See you guys tomorrow in school@ 1030am?

New foundings

Hi
I found a picture of the interior of the Volvo yacht.....
It feels cosy in there LOL
SEE the lamp on the left hand side ceiling....
Lightings exist in the yacht ,they don't have to survive in the dark bumping into one another.

And hey guys we are concentrating on making something that could be able to light up the cabin or other place in the yacht. And i will be sending an e-mail to the sailors tonight and i will post the reply on the blog itself. So do look out for it guys. And i will also print out the reply.

Don't forget me...
hi, I am Chao Qin and I am also one of the teammates in Queenstown's Volvo ocean race project. To me, this project is a little different from the other D&T projects. We get to communicate with the sailors through e-mails and blogs to ask about their opinions, views and even happenings on their yacht, the racing team that we are attached to are called the'Telefonica Black'. leading 4th xD
Around 22nd December we will get to meet the sailors in person to present our inventions when they stopover in Singapore. This project is going be more exciting, realistic and time challenging for us and we sure will do our best. Go Telefonica Black. full speed ahead!... hahas.

Hello again
Hello again guys. I think we could jot down your ideas or some research you had done over the week end and mayb we could bring it together and discuss it together:)

Kick start of Ideation
Hi I am Norman, I am one of the the team member in the Queenstown team for the Volvo ocean race. I must say this project is definitely one of the important hightlights in my D&T subject! To start the ball rolling, my team and i started to discuss about this project and how D&T can relate to it. First of all WEIGHT is an important factor that we must take note. We wouldn't want something that we make , then in the end "kena" thrown out of the yacht into the ocean because its heavy LOL.....
Another thing is the weather.... I have seen the news , the sailors are expriencing extreme weather conditions outside their cabins. So its unlikely that we can make a product to be use on the deck. Anyway i doubt they have the time to use it as they will be busy pulling their sails.etc.
Erm after idling in the computer lab last tuesday, i thought of something that the sailors may take interest in. Their Toiletries!! yes! something about the toilet. i give you all more detail in the next posting..
